MERMAIDS OF STATE Its official: A kitschy, Great-American-road-trip classic has the government stamp of approval. The Weeki Wachee (Fla.) mermaids, a tourist attraction since 1947, now are part of the states park system. The state agreed to take over management of the mermaids, famous for their choreographed underwater performances, after years of financial loss and shrinking attendance. The mermaids have had difficulty drawing crowds since the opening of Disney World in 1971.

BIRTHING POOLS Expectant mothers in the U.K. may be catching onto waters therapeutic benefits. Last fall, Britains National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence issued guidelines suggesting that during labor, water provides more effective pain relief than anything other than an epidural. According to NICE, approximately 600,000 British mommies-to-be opt to deliver in birthing pools annually. Offering public praise for the trend, British singer and reality TV star Javine Hylton announced that she opted for a pool when giving birth to her first child recently.
