The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission in Bethesda, Md., has released a report providing updated figures on drowning deaths, and pool and spa injuries related to children. CPSC’s latest data shows that nearly 300 children under 5 years old drown in pools and spas each year.

Approximately two-thirds of these deaths involve children ages 1 to 2, while approximately 3,000 youngsters must visit emergency rooms due to injuries. The agency also noted that 83 entrapments, including 11 deaths, were reported from 1999 to 2008. About 80 percent of all child deaths and injuries occurred at the homes of the victims, or that of families or friends.
