More than 420 delegates representing 49 countries attended the first-ever World Conference on Drowning Prevention, held in Vietnam this May.

During the conference, organizers and attendees, including keynote speakers Linda Quan, Peter Wernicki and Dave Jenkins (shown), began developing a plan to reduce child drowning in low- to middle-income countries.

When finished, the plan will provide a better understanding of what health experts are calling an epidemic, and how it can be prevented.

Research presented at the event indicated that child drowning can be reduced in those nations as much as 85 percent in children ages 1 to 4, and 90 percent in those age 5 and higher.
