Southeast Missouri Hospital’s HealthPoint Cape is a testament to the concept of adaptive reuse -- redeveloping older buildings where utility infrastructure and ingress/egress from previous development already exists. With careful planning and design, what was once an Albertson’s grocery store is now a state-of-the-art therapy facility, preserving green fields, wildlife habitats and natural resources in undisturbed areas.

The $5.5 millon project was completed February 2005 in response to the community’s desire for more exercise space. Today it is available for private use by fitness members and rehabilitation patients. The primary fitness concourse houses a full range of fitness options and has become a social hub for many locals.

The naturally-lit aquatic atrium is almost 4,000 square feet and offers rejuvenation of the mind and body. Designed for multiple users including rehab patients and senior citizens, the aquatics area allows patients to participate in warm-water therapy, lap swimming, lessons and fitness classes including water aerobics, and resistance training.

The facility features an all-tile, 30-by-40-foot, warm-water therapy pool and a spacious whirlpool spa. The pool includes two means of ADA-compliant access--a portable lift and a slip resistant stair entry, hydrotherapy jets, an underwater bench and perimeter hand railings. The 70.5-square-foot spa includes ADA access by transfer wall.

To round out the facility, a state-of-the-art fitness center includes both cardio and weight training areas with a full assortment of equipment. There is also a full-court basketball gymnasium primarily used for basketball, volleyball and martial arts; three aerobic studios used for a wide range of group fitness classes; and a 1/11 mile indoor track. Additionally, a demonstration kitchen offers nutrition therapy and healthy cooking classes with registered dieticians, and men’s and women’s locker rooms include private showers, steam rooms and two family changing areas.
