Judge’s Comment: The residents of this planned housing community are lucky to have such dedicated pool management.

Activities abound at the Huntsman and Briarwood pools in Blacksburg, Va.

These two junior Olympic-sized pools are part of Hethwood, a planned unit development that includes apartments, townhomes and condominiums. They provide residents with a place to get fit and build community connections. Swim lessons, water aerobics and lifeguard training are regular offerings, but special events, such as ice cream socials, poolside movies and senior events, are a key part of the programming.

To keep residents informed, the Hethwood Foundation, the homeowners association serving this planned community, publishes a monthly newsletter featuring upcoming events and programs. They have recently joined the social media bandwagon, and now promote pool activities on Facebook and Twitter.

The Huntsman pool is 25 meters, with diving boards in the deep end and a 1,000-gallon tot pool. The Briarwood pool measures the same, except the smaller tot pool only holds 400 gallons of water.

Employees for the summer usually come from one of the two nearby universities. To keep patrons safe, the staff participates in two different trainings each month — one focusing on CPR and first aid, while the other includes lifesaving instruction and team-building skills.

While there’s no more room to expand the pool facilities physically, operators continue to pursue aquatic perfection through increased efficiency and patron satisfaction.
