Judge’s Comment: Outstanding programming in its five pools make LifeCenter Plus stand out from the rest.

The Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center at the University of Texas in Austin provides a platform for athletes to hone their skills and prepare for competition at all levels.

The facility’s 9-foot-deep, 50-meter-by-25-yard pool offers a wealth of opportunities for competitive swimmers and divers. Pneumatically operated bulkheads divide the pool for short-course competition and multiple unique configurations. An 18-foot-deep diving well features six 3-meter springboards, four 1-meter springboards and a platform tower with 1-, 3-, 5-, 7.5- and 10-meter diving platforms.

Operators say a state-of-the-art timing system featuring three full-sized video boards is unparalleled nationally.

The facility opened in 1977, and recent renovations have brightened the space and increased energy efficiency. New air-handling systems were custom-built using digital Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology and designed to provide the best, most energy-efficient air quality of any natatorium in the nation.

To honor winning athletes and inspire young competitors, a Diving Hall of Fame display graces the facility. Hall of Famers include Olympian Adolph Kiefer, Ralph Flannigan, and Tex Robertson, inventor of the flip turn.
