Opened in 2010 at a cost of $8.25 million, the Smith Aquatic & Fitness Center features 27,000 square feet of aquatic space. Numerous innovative, eco-friendly features were utilized in the design. These include regenerative media pool filtration systems, active solar water heating and ultra-low flush plumbing fixtures.

Also, a geothermal well "bleeds" water to automatically cool the natatorium roof; dehumidification waste is used to warm the pool water; and the sloped site helps mediate the heating/cooling effects of the environment.

SAC is part of a recreation complex that includes a new Boys & Girls Club of America in Charlottesville, Va. It is located on the campus of the Buford Middle School. The building is situated in an open space between the adjacent club and the middle school, allowing for collaboration and synergy among the two entities.

Inside, a wide array of competitive and recreational activities are provided with maximized transparency between program spaces, and between the interior and exterior. This gives users the ability to experience the entire building and its relationship to the environment from multiple vantage points.

Glass tile and raised aluminum signage were installed at the two-story natatorium east wall as a building focal point.

Aquatic amenities at SAC are a family recreation/leisure pool with zero-depth entry, a double water slide, play structures and lazy river; and a six-lane, 25-yard competition pool with a diving board, ADA handicap lift, wet classroom and spectator viewing area.

Program offerings include a variety of swim lessons, Arthritis Foundation aquatic programs and therapeutic swimming.
