Unlike fitness clubs with loud music and members sweating it out on treadmills, wellness facilities focus on more holistic care. They draw people looking to optimize life to its fullest potential, whether recovering from illness or surgery, living with specific health conditions or just wanting to stay fit. Akron General Health & Wellness Center-North blends the recreation features of a fitness club with rehabilitation services and diagnostic technology.
Akron General Medical Center followed the success of its western location by opening this facility, Akron General Health & Wellness Center-North, in 2007. Today, the $18.5 million center is a state-of-the-art, 96,400-square-foot showcase of the latest in multigenerational wellness features. It combines a mix of fitness, therapy and medical care amenities.
Perhaps the most notable aspects of the facility are the lifestyle, fitness and therapy amenities. The center accommodates aquatic fitness and therapy with three pools and a whirlpool spa. The competition pool, spa and leisure pool are housed together, and the therapy pool is in a separate but contiguous space, visible through windows.
The leisure pool includes stair or pool-lift entry, underwater bench seating, a volleyball net, swim-in-place forced current and a spray feature with an overhead water curtain. The six-lane, 25-yard competition pool includes stair entry and pool lift. The warm-water therapy pool features a swim-in- place forced current, perimeter railings and a hydraulic pool lift.
For those who want to stay dry, there’s a 47,000-square-foot fitness center with a cardio theater, strength-training center and free-weight area that has more than 200 pieces of equipment. There’s also an elevated track, a 4,410-square-foot gymnasium for multiple-sport use, a climbing wall and two aerobic studios outfitted for various fitness classes. Additionally, a specially designed children’s exercise area helps the little ones experience the joys and benefits of exercise.
The staff facilitates members’ health by working with them and their doctors, offering therapeutic techniques, exercise and nutrition programs, fitness classes, weight and stress management training, and health risk assessments/screenings. On the medical care side, there’s a 24-hour emergency department, full-service outpatient lab and testing services, and sports medicine and physical therapy, including a sports performance center.
Diagnostic services such as X-rays and MRIs also are provided.
Free and low-cost community education programs geared toward prevention and early detection are available, so the community can live healthier, happier, more productive lives
