Palm trees and warm rain … in Canada? Yes, for members of the Rady Jewish Community Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, this year’s Class 5 winner.

Even when temperatures drop well below freezing, the atmosphere inside the aquatic center is that of a tropical inlet, complete with a beach-entry pool and palm trees that gush warm rain. Escapists can also enjoy water motion from the jets in the leisure pool.

Within this piece of paradise, the leisure pool connects to a five-lane lap pool that hosts a wealth of programming from lessons and lifeguarding to a gentle-water aquafit program. Other options include a water ai-chi class and therapy classes for those with cerebral palsy.

Customer service is what draws people to the Rady JCC, whose membership numbers have doubled in the past five years.

Every third Saturday the facility hosts a “Super Saturday” inviting families for events such as Sports Day and Sea Animal Day. And even Hawaiian Day is possible during the Manitoba winter, with grass skirts and a luau to complement the paradise.
