When brothers Tom and Donny Weber started a design-build firm in 1983, they never anticipated the effect they would have on the aquatics industry.
Today, Weber Group works with just about all of the major amusement park operators, and they’re bringing what they’ve learned about brand building to the aquatics industry. Signature aquatic projects include work at virtually all of the Six Flags parks, Dollywood Splash Country Great Wolf Lodge CoCo Key Water Resorts and Zoombezi Bay at the Columbus Zoo in Columbus, Ohio.
With a background in architecture and construction, the Webers didn’t even establish a business connection with the amusement/recreation market until 1990, when they developed a relationship with an owner of Old Kentucky Kingdom amusement park. Donny met the owner’s wife, a fellow member of the board of the local YMCA. When Old Kentucky Kingdom became Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom, Weber Group established a relationship with Six Flags and went on to do a number of projects for that organization. It was through that work that the Webers developed their company’s signature formula of branding through construction and design.
“We’re architects first, so we understand how theming fits in,” Donny says. The idea is to take time and space and create a sense of place and occasion.
