Meeting the desires of all in well-rounded community meant adding a variety of features to attract all age groups. Lap pools fill the need of the competitive swim community, while slides, a climbing wall and log roll cater to the adventurous. Small children aren't forgotten: The interactive play structure and spraypark introduce them to water play.

  • The facility's theme recognizes the citys mining and industrial heritage from the early 1900s. Designers retained the bathhouse that had been there since 1909, and materials were chosen to reflect the history while integrating with modern play equipment. Clunky flanged steel structures add a contemporary, industrial feel, with unpainted galvanized metal and tan-colored finishes for the framework.

  • The site includes a large city park with steep grade changes, which designers utilized by including multiple tiers and transitions, thus making it easy to group amenities together in their own intimate spaces. This also minimized earth moving.

Say the designers: “Conservation was focused in two areas: efficiencies of equipment and water reduction. With respect to the recirculation pumps for treating the water, care was taken to size the pumps exactly at the operating point needed to provide the pressure and flow rate for the system. This was done by accurately modelling the piping system in order to calculate the exact pressure loss of the piping system at the recirculation flow rate required. Steps were also taken to reduce water consumption of the facility by extending the length of time between backwash cleaning cycles for the filter systems.”

Built in 2013, the Schifferdecker Aquatic Center was designed to bring the community of Joplin, Mo., together, to upgrade citizens’ quality of life and attract new residents after the tragic tornado that struck in 2011. To reinforce the entire community's involvement with the project, designers included features for every age group. Small children are introduced to water via the interactive play structure and spraypark, while slides, a climbing wall and log roll provide adventure for older visitors. The 25- and 50-meter lap pools cater to Joplin’s active competitive swim community. The large pool boasts several features that allow it to remain in use at all times. All told, 16 recreational play activities are included among the pools and wet deck areas.
