In March 2005, the South Suburban Park and Recreation District celebrated the grand opening of the award-winning Douglas H. Buck Community Recreation Center. The 54,000-square-foot, $11.65 million facility in downtown Littleton, Colo., replaced an older senior center but was created to meet the health and wellness needs of a diverse community.

The completed facility goes beyond meeting the needs of seniors, appealing to a younger generation and encouraging wellness through the use of recreational components.

When it comes to fitness, amenities include, a gymnasium, fitness area and aerobics studio and a 16-laps-per-mile running track. But one of the most popular areas may be the natatorium, which houses three separate indoor pools designed to meet the needs of the entire community. The zero depth-entry leisure pool features a multitude of options for aquatic play, relaxation and aquatic fitness. A current channel provides a nice option for workouts, interactive elements including and geysers, two vortex dumping buckets. And a kid-sized, alligator-shaped slide, is perfect for keeping young children active.

Others take advantage of the therapy pool equipped with a handicap ramp and lift or the 3-lane, 25-meter lap pool. The lap pool meets the needs of those looking for competitive swimming and/or exercising and can also be used for water basketball.

To encourage relaxation, a spacious deck/lounge area showcases the aesthetics and architectural lighting of the facility and includes seating areas designed for socialization and gathering, especially for seniors after they complete a wellness class. Additionally, the outdoor patio includes a custom-designed whirlpool and sun deck.

Capturing the concept of wellness the Buck Community Recreation Center has a range of amenities to better the mind and spirit as well. These include:

  • Classrooms
  • Stage/Wet crafts room
  • A commercial kitchen (for cooking classes and nutrition workshops)
  • An independently operated health clinic
  • Lounge with billiards, library, and craft sales
  • Babysitting area
  • Men/Women/Family changing rooms
  • Rentable multipurpose rooms
  • Computer rooms

With such a wide range of offerings, the facility is helping to instill wellness and healthy lifestyles in people of all ages and positively shape the future of Littleton.
