How do you turn a seasonal business into a year-round one? At Camelback Mountain Resort, that was the question when the owners wanted to add a waterpark to the ski resort.

Ken Ellis and his design firm, Aquatic Development Group, based the Albany, N.Y. area, helped them do just that, adding Camelbeach Mountain Waterpark to the footprint in 1998. “You ski right through and around the waterpark,” Ellis says. Now he owns the park with Art Berry, his college roommate.

For the winter, staff fill the waterpark’s Adventure River and one of the landing pools with 55-gallon drums and top them with plywood before the resort makes 5 feet of snow on top.

In spring and fall, the staff spends nearly two months converting the resort for the next season.
