NorthPointe Health and Wellness Campus prides itself on being the first comprehensive facility of its kind. Designed and owned by Beloit Memorial Hospital, the facility was opened in 2007 to meet the rapidly growing health-care needs of the northern Illinois area.

Today, the facility offers a range of acute medical care services alongside medically integrated wellness amenities such as a children’s fitness area, exercise studios — and an aquatic space designed with patrons’ needs in mind.

Aquatic amenities include an indoor 1,008-square-foot, warm-water therapy pool and a 3,670-square-foot, seven-lane indoor lap pool that has two lanes made to accommodate training for competitive swimmers. In addition, the men’s and women’s locker rooms feature whirlpool spas.

In designing the pools, the task was to create a facility capable of meeting the needs of those not always optimally served in typical recreational environments, such as seniors, individuals with disabilities or chronic

illnesses, and those recovering from surgery or injury.

To that end, the design team paid special attention to issues of accessibility. The pool area is centrally located just off the first floor welcoming atrium and café, directly opposite immediate care services. Both pools have continuous deck- level gutters that allow easy entry into the water and access via a handicap lift or stairs designed to meet ADA guidelines. The whirlpools can be reached by either the stairs or the raised wall, which allows for easy entry from a wheelchair.

Northpointe was built around a holistic approach to health. Keeping that in mind, the development team incorporated several calming elements. The campus design includes rounded shapes, eye-pleasing colors, soft lighting and plenty of open space. And throughout the facility, large windows provide natural lighting and views of the surrounding prairie.
