While service firms are being asked to identify and replace hundreds of thousands of drain covers that were deemed potentially hazardous by the CPSC, some health departments are finding they have little authority to carry out the the recommendations.

The safety standard for suction outlet covers is under review, and the committee making changes is near completion. The changes to the ASME-ANSI A112.19.8 standard come as manufacturers are trying to develop new products following a CPSC-mandated recall.

The family of an entrapment victim has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Sandals Resorts International and several manufacturers. Court documents claimed a variety of unsafe conditions were in place that caused the accident.

It is really an unthinkable tragedy for her family and community. We must support, supervise and train lifeguards to prevent this from happening again.

I know that my community values aquatics, because they renew, by vote, a millage every three years to help support our aquatics center. That millage (property tax) is over 50% of our operating budget...
