Ah, the new year. A time when we can all start fresh with resolutions to improve. In the publishing world, the new year also is a time for fresh starts. It’s when we usually make tweaks and changes that we hope will improve our magazines and your reading experience.
This year, we’ve got a lot of improvements to show off, starting with a freshened, cleaner look on all the pages. You’ll notice these subtle changes especially in our break-out boxes and sidebars.
But the really exciting changes have to do with the columns. We’ve added two all-new monthly installments: One addresses the changing industry — and the other tackles one of the most difficult challenges operators face.
The column that addresses the changing industry is WaterFitness. If you don’t already have water fitness/therapy programs at your facility, you’re missing out on a major trend, one that can really add to your bottom line. As the 76 million baby boomers age, they’re looking for low-intensity, high-energy workouts, and the water is just the ticket. Plus, when they overdo it, water also is a great place to recover.
Part of the problem is that water fitness is sometimes not very well-understood by operators. But our water fitness column takes the mystery out of it with easy-to-understand graphics and explanations. You’ll learn basic moves and whether your facility is right for the featured exercise. Plus, you’ll be getting this information from Andrea Salzman, one of the foremost experts on water fitness and therapy. The column even comes with a handy “Additional Resources” box and easy-to-follow online links. Of course, those links will be available here on our Web site as well.
Our next new column also is called LifeSavers. When it comes time to think up yet another motivational or in-service training regimen for your lifeguards, we hope you’ll think of it as just that.
The genesis of this column is you. Over the years, I’ve had numerous conversations with operators about the difficulty they have motivating their staffs, or coming up with ways to keep their in-service training fresh. Now you have help — a whole industry of help — because these columns will be coming from your peers across the nation and the world. Knowing how busy you are, we’ve included a handy “Quick Start” guide with simple steps to walk you through exactly how to do the programs.
So there you have it: our resolution to be even better in 2008, so you can, too.
