Over the past five years, 46 Division I men’s
teams have been cut.
At least two universities recently announced plans to
eliminate programs. Last month, South Carolina's Clemson
University told the men’s swimming and diving
teams and the women’s swim team that the program
will be phased out in two years.
In Pennsylvania,Duquesne University plans to cut its
men’s swimming program despite a fund-raising
effort through "Go for 5," which aims to finance the team
at least until the 2009-2010 freshman class graduates. The
Gofor5.org goal is to reach 1 million people with a request
to donate money in the increments of $5.
