Former substitute teacher Jonathan Sails was charged with involuntary manslaughter in February 2014 after 14-year-old KeAir Swift drowned while Sails was overseeing a swim class on Nov. 8, 2013.
According to reports, Sails was sitting on the bleachers at East Detroit High School — not in the pool where he should have been — when students informed him Swift was drowning. And instead of immediately jumping into action, Sails allegedly changed his clothing before jumping into the pool.
The school's liability has since also come into question, with a lawsuit by KeAir Swift’s estate and KeAir’s mother, Lakisha, filed against three school officials: teacher James Reed, physical education teacher/department leader Mark Weigand and school principal Mary Finnigan, according to the Macomb Daily.
