When the Aquatics Complex was designed, the philosophy was to appeal to patrons of all ages. Today, it includes a spray playground, a leisure pool and a competition pool suitable for hosting swim meets and synchronized swimming shows. The three spaces allow operators to host a broad range of activities simultaneously. In addition, the facility includes a large amount of green space, with shaded rental space for private parties.

Realizing the importance of preserving the environment, the city of Palm Beach Gardens initiated a strong “Going Green” campaign. The Aquatics Complex features a number of green features, including energy-saving pool covers, recycling, window tinting in office areas, and timers for overhead lighting. The furniture is even made of recycled plastics.

Another facility highlight: the well-trained staff and community service volunteers. Managers hold monthly training sessions, supplemented by periodic skills testing and training from the city’s police department. According to Paul Kohler, recreation supervisor, the aquatic management team feels an obligation to promote a healthy lifestyle by encouraging the staff to eat healthy and exercise daily.

Hoping to boost attendance and increase awareness, operators recently instituted several new marketing strategies. Each Sunday from October to April, employees work a marketing booth at the Palm Beach Gardens Greenmarket, which draws an average of 3,000 patrons weekly. In summer 2009, management ran a “Swim and Save” campaign, offering reduced rates at special times such as Family Fridays and Masters Weekends. They also established partnerships with local hotels to give visitors opportunities to visit the Aquatics Complex at resident discount rates.

Environmental sustainability, training and marketing initiatives aside, it may be the attention to detail that makes Palm Beach Gardens Aquatics Complex stand out. The vibrant facility colors attract attention from the road, and the staff is expected to echo that same warmth and energy. Operators say attention to customer service — things such as a smile and warm greeting, and clean facilities — helps to ensure a large contingent of repeat guests.
