Named for aquanaut and astronaut Scott Carpenter, this park underwent an extension renovation and expansion. The existing 50-meter pool and bathhouse were refurbished, while the team added several pools and water features, including a double tower slide.
The 50-meter lap pool will host multiple swim clubs and teams, and provide a space for training local swimmers. A leisure pool includes a water-play feature with interactive elements for smaller children, while a lazy river, dive platform, climbing wall and large slide tower appeal to older kids, teens and adults.
So all could access the water, all pools, pool deck areas and bathhouse amenities are handicap-accessible, while an adult changing room accommodates older visitors with disabilities.
To honor the park’s namesake, the design team chose a space and exploration theme, which offered the added benefit of educating the community. This is reinforced, for instance, in a splash pad with interactive water features that include a large water dumping rocket. The space theme also found its way into the bathhouse architecture. Metal privacy panels feature constellations carved out with backlighting, and overhead light fixtures form sunbursts.
The team made sure to include plenty of bicycle parking and larger paths to facilitate multi-modal transportation — an important goal for the city. Almost all of the trees were saved to retain the shade and preserve the center’s history.
