Sporty Space

Meant to serve its namesake school and others throughout the district, the competitive swimming pool at Edgewood High School measures 51.5-meters by 25 yards. It is located near the school’s athletic core, which includes the track and field, football field and tennis courts.

Depending on the events, the 12,869-square-foot vessel can be divided into eighteen 25-yard lanes or ten 50-meter lanes. It is suitable for local swimming and water-polo competitions for Edgewood and nearby West Covina High School. But, with 2,100 square feet of shallow water, it also houses educational and community-based programming such as physical education, athletic training and learn-to-swim programs.

More than 9,000 square feet of shade canopies and plenty of spectator seating keep visitors comfortable. The venue also includes expansive decking, a generous entry plaza and support amenities such as locker rooms to facilitate competitive and community events of various types and sizes. They not only serve the pool program, but other athletic core and community programs.

For energy savings, thermal solar panels were installed on the shade canopies to heat the pool.

The team sough to create a bright, energetic atmosphere to celebrate the joy of and reverence for athletics. The facility’s simple, modern design includes athletes playing different sports depicted throughout. Inspired by the color of the pool water, the team used a bright blue for the support buildings.
