WAVE OF THE FUTURE

This center may have been 20 years in the making, but it was well worth the wait.

Funded by the City of Dublin, Calif., to provide a regional draw, it changed back and forth in scope over the two decades, but the more ambitious plans won out, yielding a 31,000 -square-foot complex that serves everyone from small children to serious athletes. By integrating the aquatics facility into a larger community park that includes an outdoor amphitheater, the team positioned it to draw more traffic.

The building’s striking wave design provides a preview of the beach theme inside and on the outdoor pools. A translucent ethylene tetrafluoroethylene roof not only helps create the glowing effect when viewed from outside at night, but the lightweight material also allows 95% of light into the building without the need for columns to support the structure.

Three swimming pools and six water slides can be found on the property. Inside, a 25-yard warm-water teaching pool has six lanes, an accessible ramp and a peninsula for easier movement. The outdoor competition pool measures 25 meter by 25 yards, has 11 lanes, and also features a peninsula to separate shallow water from deep. An activity pool has 4,945 square feet of shallow water, a large interactive aquatic play structure, and water play features. The water slide complex boasts six slides — enough to provide an exciting waterpark experience without typical waterpark fees.

Energy-efficient equipment and solar energy help reduce operating expenses.
