Elegantly Playful

This 5-acre waterpark supports a resort named one of the top 10 new attractions in USA Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice 2020 Travel Awards. With a design meant to appeal to visitors of all stripes — and home to the most slides and activities in Miami Dade County — it clearly has done its job.

A variety of amenities attract a wide swath of visitors: a 60-foot tower, seven slides, lazy river, three-rider surf simulator, kids’ waterplay tower, entry pool and an oasis pool. The world’s first double tube Master Blaster water coaster and a FlowRider Triple surf machine appeal to the more adventurous.

To land on the site’s aesthetic, the design team sought input from the community and took cues from the resort’s classical beach-front architecture. Doing so, they aimed for a tasteful, subtle look. Plantings evoked a tropical getaway, while upscale finish materials such as travertine pavers upped the elegance factor.

Within that context, Kids Cove provides a fun, whimsical space. To help it blend with the simple aesthetic, the designers decided against a mythical or fantasy theme, instead taking their inspiration from the ice cream and candy shops that signify summer.

To bring the large space to human scale, plenty of smaller, distinct spaces were created. This allows a more intimate feel within the large, feature-packed park.

The pre-existing main Laguna Pool and lazy river were refinished and received new mechanical systems.
