Hayward Launches Commercial Division

Hayward Industries has launched a commercial division.

The new entity, named Hayward Commercial Pool Products, draws on technologies from several sources: Hayward Pool Products, two acquired firms and a division of Hayward’s parent company.

Elizabeth, N.J.-based Hayward Industries — known as one of the “Big Three” pool and spa component manufacturers — has sold commercial pool components for years. But the new unit represents a significant move to formalize its position and creates a platform for developing new technology for the commercial market.

The commercial umbrella covers control technology supplied by CAT Controllers, acquired by Hayward in 2008; commercial robotic cleaners from AquaVac Products, purchased by Hayward in 2007; and engineered thermoplastic valves and fittings by Hayward Flow Control, an arm of Hayward’s parent company that caters to the industrial marketplace.

“It’s a natural adjacency for us to look at the commercial space for two reasons,” said Stuart Baker, Hayward’s vice president of business development. “First, because we had acquired some companies that were operational in that space. And, secondly, it gives us some extra diversity and sales growth opportunity within our core market.”

The move is a sign of the times, Baker added. “With the slowdown in the residential business, we’re seeing our customers diversifying in aftermarket, remodeling and into the commercial space. We want to be able to support our customers and grow with them,”he added.

Headquartered in Rockville, Md., at the former offices of CAT Controllers, Hayward Commercial Pool Products will, for now, focus on Class-B (hotel, motel, apartment and condominium) pools. Patrick Sweeney, former CAT founder and president, will serve as the division’s general manager.
