The 2012 Olympic games will begin in just about two weeks and the U.S. swimmers are ready to go for gold.
The US Olympic swim team was selected at the trials, held late last month in Omaha, Neb., and broadcast to record high ratings on NBC. Twenty five men and twenty five women have earned spots in London.
On the men’s side, Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte will undoubtedly be the pair to watch. Phelps will be swimming three relays and four individual races: The 200 IM, 400 IM, 100 Fly and 200 Fly. According to the USA Swimming roster, Lochte will be swimming the 800 Free relay, the 200 Back and the 200 Free, and competing against Phelps in the 200 IM and 400 IM. Other team members back from 2008 include Cullen Jones, Jason Lezak and Brendan Hansen.
Connor Jaeger, 21, a student athlete at the University of Michigan, is one of the youngest American men. He will compete in the 1,500-meter freestyle.
On the women’s team, Missy Franklin is the new “It Girl.” The 17-year-old phenom from Centennial, Colo., will be swimming the 100 and 200 Free,100 and 200 Back, 400 Free relay, and 800 Free relay. Joining Missy is a mix of more young talent and veterans including Natalie Coughlin, Jessica Hardy, Dana Vollmer and Rebecca Soni.
