Several design features are sure to make the CV Starr Community Center/Spath Aquatic Center a state-of-the art facility for years to come.

For example, a key element is the aquatics center's layout, which allows the staff to easily supervise the aquatic and dry activity areas at the same time.

The lobby/reception area has sight lines into the main entry, the locker room entries, and the multipurpose, aerobics and fitness rooms.

That’s good because something is always happening. Activities such as Moms, Pops and Tots Swim Lessons, exercise classes for the elderly, adapted aquatics programs for those with special needs, and holiday events like the Winter Wonderland, encourage community attendance.

The center also collaborates with businesses and agencies to offer water safety programs and classes.

CV Starr celebrated its first anniversary in August 2010. During the initial year of operation, the staff has worked hard to ensure that the facility and programs are meeting public demand.

A suggestion box reviewed regularly allows patrons to provide input on the changes or additions they’d like to see. Suggestions from visitors led to a Parent/Tot Swimming Time and Arthritis Water Exercise classes.

Best Practices

The facility was planned to be eco-friendly and energy-efficient.

The aquatic space uses natural lighting; energy-efficient pool heaters and light fixtures; space conditioning equipment, including a heat recovery system and direct digital controls; thermal pool covers; and low-water-use plumbing fixtures.

A photovoltaic system lets CV Starr produce a portion of its own energy.

“I’m very impressed with the state-of-the-art green technology used in the construction of this facility. The facility is able to generate a portion of its own renewable energy. Kudos!”
