The growing population in Kodiak City, Alaska, meant the existing Kodiak Island Borough High School indoor pool was facing obsolescence. Following extensive information gathering and review, school officials chose to close the swimming pool and replace it in a new location behind the school.
Opened in October 2009, the new natatorium features a 6-lane-by-25-yard competition pool, a 1-meter diving board, a 24- to 42-inch-deep learn-to-swim training area, and a toddler wading area with bench seating.
With an ADA accessible ramp and stair entry, the pool is utilized for a variety of lessons, fitness classes and special events for both high school students and the entire community. While swim practice is in session, younger siblings and children can enjoy the adjacent shallow water.
Pool designers and engineers continue to improve innovation in design and systems. Kodiak Island Borough and the Kodiak Island Borough School District opted for on-site chlorine generation. This newer, saline pool sanitizing technology costs less to operate, requires less storage space, and minimizes the necessity for deliveries and handling of chemicals. The pool also includes UV sanitization, and an ADA-compliant accessible ramp and stair entry.
