It's an issue Aquatics International has been at the forefront of reporting on, and now a major Canadian city is struggling with the issue of a lack of swimming ability among minorities.
Montreal's Police Department recently launched an effort to recruit more ethnic minorities. However, the hiring drive hit a serious speed bump when it came time for the candidates to take the required swim test, particularly for those who live in areas without public swimming pools, reports CTV News Montreal.
"Some groups fail swim tests more than others," Fo Niemi, executive director of the Centre for Research-Action on Race Relations, told the news agency. "I think it's something we have to look at in terms of removing obstacles to fair employment opportunities."
