Colorado Springs, Colo.-based USA Swimming has reported its largest single-year member increase since its inception. The organization now has 286,084 athletes and 315,640 total members, including coaches.

The 11.2 percent upsurge is attributed in part to the popularity of the 2008 Olympic swim team, and has far outpaced other post-Olympic growth periods. In all, 99 new clubs joined the USA Swimming roster in 2009 as of September. The average member club size: 106 athletes, another record for the group.
