For more than a decade, aquatics facilities have continued to face roadblocks to hiring lifeguards. The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals expects this year to prove even more challenging in this regard.
The organization said the U.S. government is denying record numbers of applicants of visas, which will likely thwart the efforts of those looking to supplement their guard force through summer visitors from overseas. APSP expects the shortage to particularly affect the Mid-Atlantic states, because lifeguards are required there on all commercial and condominium pools and spas.
"Those who are expecting a Memorial Day holiday by the pool may be waiting a few weeks while companies redouble their efforts to recruit and certify quality lifeguards," said APSP President/CEO Lawrence Caniglia.
