Drain Cover Standard Sees Implementation Delay

Find out when the newest version of the swimming pool drain cover standard will be enforced.

The newest version of ANSI/APSP/ICC-16, the standard governing drain covers, will not be enforced for another six months, in light of production challenges caused by the pandemic.

Overseen by the Consumer Product Safety Commission to ensure compliance with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act, the standard now requires manufacturers to test their drain covers with all compatible plumbing sizes and provide separate flow ratings based on line size. They also must provide more thorough labeling and information.

Now, products manufactured on May 24, 2021 or after must comply with the standard. Those made before that date are not beholden to the change and can remain on the market.
