Two years after the drowning death of a Jackson, Miss., teen, a settlement has been reached in the wrongful death lawsuit filed by his family.

The family alleged negligence on the part of the city-operated pool and the case was set to go to trial on the same day the settlement was reached. The victim, 17-year-old Rubin Ledbetter was found in the deep end of the pool, according to local officials.

Had the case gone to trial, the maximum allowable settlement the family could have received had they won a judgment against the city of Jackson is $500,000, per state law.
