After losing five competitors following several recent races, USA Triathlon is establishing a committee to determine what can be done to prevent additional deaths.

The independent panel will include three physicians and two certified race directors who will conduct a review to look for commonalities among the cases.

The panel is expected to give an update at USA Triathalon’s annual race director symposium in January.

In August, a male and female competitor died during the swim portion of the Nautica New York City Triathlon. Two others were lost during the aquatic portion in events in Kentucky; and, last month, a man died during the bike portion of the Nation’s Triathlon in Washington, D.C.
