Swimmers in Davie, Fla. are in good hands.

The city’s lifeguards are the reigning champs of the 2017 AI Summer Lifeguard Challenge.

Right out the gates, Team Davie proved formidable competition. The group made its mark with back-to-back wins, beginning with May’s technically difficult baby-rescue drill. The Florida crew then followed up with a sweeping victory in June, placing four of its teams in the Top 4— a Summer Lifeguard Challenge first! In that drill, Team Davie was tasked with sending two rescuers to save six victims. Not easy.

Runners-up Team Temecula also deserves praise for participating in all three challenges, including August’s bonus round. The lifesavers hailing from Temecula, Calif. put in stellar demonstrations each time, even earning a win in July’s backboard challenge and scoring favorably in the bonus round.

Of the three years that Aquatics International has hosted this competition, 2017 brought out the most competitors by far and included some of our toughest challenges yet. Summer Lifeguard Challenge Judge Pete DeQuincy was inundated with video submissions from coast to coast, making Davie’s and Temecula’s wins all the more impressive. Kudus to both!

Watch the video below to hear remarks from DeQuincy.

Don’t let your skills rust over this winter. We’ll be back next year with another edition of the Summer Lifeguard Challenge.

See you in 2018!
